Lewis joined CFTH in February 2019 and came out guns firing! After just a couple of weeks getting in the groove of things, he jumped right into the Crossfit Open. His desire to improve, practice and grow as an athlete is very evident. He is consistent and puts in the wor and has seen awesome results because of it. How long have you been doing Crossfit/how long at CFTH?
I've been a member at CFTH since mid-February and it's my first experience of Crossfit. Favorite movement/WOD and why? I joined just before The Open this year so 19.1 (rowing and wallball shots) has a place in my heart... weirdly. Other than that, I love anything with a bar, especially snatches. Something positive Crossfit has taught you? Crossfit has taught me to take on the exercises and movements that I may have avoided previously. This has taught me that maybe some things never get easier, but this doesn't mean you can't get better at them. Any advice for someone just starting? It's easy to compare yourself to others when you first start and as soon as you stop doing that, you'll start to see huge improvements. Listen to the coaches, trust the workouts and scale (tailor the workouts to you)! How long have you been in Hanoi? I moved to Hanoi in mid-January. Favorite thing to do in Hanoi (outside of Crossfit)? The crossfit community is amazing but so is the general community in Hanoi. You will always find someone in the boat as you, at the same stage and/or wanting the same thing. There's always something to do, whatever day of the week it is and getting to know new people is always fun. Favorite thing to eat in Hanoi? Sticky rice for breakfast after a 5.30am workout! Carrie Veatch arrived in Hanoi in June of 2018 without any Crossfit experience. She wasn't sure how long she would be staying in the city, but wanted to give us a try. She started Crossfit in the same way she does everything: with 100% intensity, focus, and positivity. Carrie has spent the last year setting goals and crushing them. She challenges herself daily in her physical fitness as well as her mental tenacity. And just 6 months into her Crossfit career, she decided to take on a competition. Carrie is the first person to say hello to a new face at the box; she invites drop-ins to social gatherings, and wants every person (member or not) to feel welcome, respected and challenged. It's been a year and Carrie does not have any plans of slowing down (or leaving Hanoi!). Let's get to know her a bit better. What does CFTH mean to you?
CFTH has become a community that I’m so proud to be a part of. From the time I randomly dropped in traveling a year ago to deciding to stay longer in Hanoi, the people are what makes the box so unique! Training alongside a community of people allows me to push my mental and physical limits daily. I love walking into the box each day, seeing familiar faces, and also welcoming new faces into our community. My time in Hanoi has absolutely been shaped for the better because of the community of CFTH! How long have you been doing Crossfit/how long at CFTH? 1 year of Crossfit - Started in Hanoi! Favorite movement/WOD and why? Clean and jerk recently has become my favorite lift. It is challenging for me, but gives me something to work on. Something positive Crossfit has taught you? Sports, and now Crossfit, have taught me to prioritize surrounding myself with people that encourage me, push my limits, and remind me that I'm stronger than I think. Any advice for someone just starting? Don’t overthink it. Just show up. Work hard and know you are stronger than you think! How long have you been in Hanoi? 1 year Favorite thing to do in Hanoi (outside of Crossfit)? I would say people watch. Never gets old watching scooters. Favorite thing to eat in Hanoi? Anything I can find that is gluten free. Pho or tacos :) “I’m not fit enough to do CrossFit!”
“Hmmm… I need to get fit before I try that stuff!” Self-doubt and finding reasons to not start things is something we all experience. There also seems to be a common mis-perception of CrossFit. It’s intense and hard work and there is a prerequisite level of skill and fitness required to start doing it. We’ve all seen the athletes on Netflix and Nike commercials and there’s no denying it takes years of hard graft to get to that level! However, for the majority of us, CrossFit is about becoming better versions of ourselves day by day. We all started somewhere and we have people of varying backgrounds and abilities training at our box. You start wherever your fitness level is and BUILD on it from there. To build big towers, you need strong foundations. With this in mind, in May we launched an essentials course for all new members. This compulsory one week (3 session) course provides new members with the basics in movement, technique and terminology. At CrossFit Tay Ho, our aim is to ensure all members are moving safely and confidently throughout their workouts. By exposing new members to the common movements and movement patterns we use in the gym, members should feel able to do any workout that is written on the board when they arrive at group classes. The courses are capped at 6 people to make sure you are getting the individual attention you need from your Coach. The course is also a great opportunity to get to know your Coach and fellow new members before joining the group class environment. All leading to you being able to train with us effectively, and become a better version of yourself each day. So, NO MORE EXCUSES! Come and join in the fun.
