Give it up for Sarah Schnieder! She has been a consistent presence in the early morning class for the last year. Sarah shows up every morning with a smile on her face ready to tackle the workout. Sarah has shown amazing amounts of patience and positivity coming back from her knee injury. Rehab is never simple and it’s easy to lose motivation when injured, but Sarah has really been committed to her recovery. She has turned up to the 5am classes ready to try something new and always asks for scaling opportunities to work around the injury. Great to see her now gaining confidence in the knee and jumping and even sometimes running. She’s been a role model in how she’s dealt with it. Sarah will be leaving Crossfit Tay Ho (and Hanoi) in June 2020, we will be cherishing the last few months we have with her! Read on to find out what CFTH means to Sarah and some other interesting tidbits about her! Here is what Crossfit Tay Ho means to Sarah: “CFTH has helped me to work through knee rehab and regain strength and mobility, as well as confidence in what I can do physically. The coaches are so incredibly supportive and patient, while also holding each of us to a high standard. The community is kind and goofy, and I very much look forward to coming to the box every morning.” How long have you been doing Crossfit/how long at CFTH?
I started at CFTH (and Crossfit) Spring 2019, so we're coming up to a year! Favorite movement/WOD and why? Deadlift - it's a movement I've worked on for quite some time between softball and coaching, and one that I was able to do consistently through all of my knee rehab fun. It makes me feel strong and capable. Something positive Crossfit has taught you? Crossfit, particularly CFTH, has helped to remind me to have patience with myself, but also to push myself. The encouraging and supportive community has become a consistently positive part of my life here in Hanoi. How long have you been in Hanoi? I have been here a year and a half, and I will be be taking off in June of this year. Favorite thing to eat in Hanoi? Anything with passionfruit in it. And fresh spring rolls.

Carter joined the CrossFit Tay Ho essentials course in September 2019, and ever since he has been a regular smiling face at 9am & Barbell Club. Each session Carter comes with an open and inquisitive mind listening to coaches, asking coaches and giving his all in WODs. In the space of two months, Carter’s movement and performance has improved dramatically - showcasing all his hard work. Plus give this boy a sandbag and no one has a chance!! Carter, you are a pleasure to have in the CrossFit Tay Ho team and we cannot be more excited to see where your Health & Fitness journey takes you. In Carter's own words... "Crossfit, to me, means reaching goals I didn't previously know I had. Challenging myself not only physically, but mentally. Before I moved to Hanoi I didn't have any expectations of the things I would get myself into and I am glad to say CFTH has been one of those things. Something that has become part of my daily routine. Something that impacts positively on my physical health and mental health. I always walk out of the CFTH gym feeling better then I did walking in. I enjoy that I get to meet people from all different walks of life and discover how they also ended up here in Hanoi. CFTH is a place where you feel empowered by the continual support and encouragement and allows you to empower the people around you by doing the same. " How long have you been doing Crossfit?
I have been doing Crossfit for two months and started my journey at Crossfit Tay Ho. Only regret is not starting sooner. Favorite movement/WOD and why? After much deliberation I would have to say box jumps are my favorite movement. Can't say I have a favorite WOD but something with running and minimal/no wall balls. Something positive Crossfit has taught you? Crossfit has taught me that it is more about your mental strength rather then your physical strength. 'Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you are right' That is something that impacts me positively by being able to show yourself that the only limit is yourself. Any advice for someone just starting? If I could have given myself any advice two months ago when I had just started I would tell myself to celebrate your personal achievements no matter the size. To make a habit of going regardless of how much you don't want to as you'll be glad you went and that no one is there to judge you but rather to encourage you. How long have you been in Hanoi? I have been in Hanoi for four months Favorite thing to do in Hanoi (outside of Crossfit)? Meeting new people and new experiences. Favorite thing to eat in Hanoi? I'll be honest in saying I'm not the biggest fan of Vietnamese food or the wide range of different textures! My favourite fruit that I have had since being in Hanoi would be mango stars, yumm! Lewis joined CFTH in February 2019 and came out guns firing! After just a couple of weeks getting in the groove of things, he jumped right into the Crossfit Open. His desire to improve, practice and grow as an athlete is very evident. He is consistent and puts in the wor and has seen awesome results because of it. How long have you been doing Crossfit/how long at CFTH?
I've been a member at CFTH since mid-February and it's my first experience of Crossfit. Favorite movement/WOD and why? I joined just before The Open this year so 19.1 (rowing and wallball shots) has a place in my heart... weirdly. Other than that, I love anything with a bar, especially snatches. Something positive Crossfit has taught you? Crossfit has taught me to take on the exercises and movements that I may have avoided previously. This has taught me that maybe some things never get easier, but this doesn't mean you can't get better at them. Any advice for someone just starting? It's easy to compare yourself to others when you first start and as soon as you stop doing that, you'll start to see huge improvements. Listen to the coaches, trust the workouts and scale (tailor the workouts to you)! How long have you been in Hanoi? I moved to Hanoi in mid-January. Favorite thing to do in Hanoi (outside of Crossfit)? The crossfit community is amazing but so is the general community in Hanoi. You will always find someone in the boat as you, at the same stage and/or wanting the same thing. There's always something to do, whatever day of the week it is and getting to know new people is always fun. Favorite thing to eat in Hanoi? Sticky rice for breakfast after a 5.30am workout! Carrie Veatch arrived in Hanoi in June of 2018 without any Crossfit experience. She wasn't sure how long she would be staying in the city, but wanted to give us a try. She started Crossfit in the same way she does everything: with 100% intensity, focus, and positivity. Carrie has spent the last year setting goals and crushing them. She challenges herself daily in her physical fitness as well as her mental tenacity. And just 6 months into her Crossfit career, she decided to take on a competition. Carrie is the first person to say hello to a new face at the box; she invites drop-ins to social gatherings, and wants every person (member or not) to feel welcome, respected and challenged. It's been a year and Carrie does not have any plans of slowing down (or leaving Hanoi!). Let's get to know her a bit better. What does CFTH mean to you?
CFTH has become a community that I’m so proud to be a part of. From the time I randomly dropped in traveling a year ago to deciding to stay longer in Hanoi, the people are what makes the box so unique! Training alongside a community of people allows me to push my mental and physical limits daily. I love walking into the box each day, seeing familiar faces, and also welcoming new faces into our community. My time in Hanoi has absolutely been shaped for the better because of the community of CFTH! How long have you been doing Crossfit/how long at CFTH? 1 year of Crossfit - Started in Hanoi! Favorite movement/WOD and why? Clean and jerk recently has become my favorite lift. It is challenging for me, but gives me something to work on. Something positive Crossfit has taught you? Sports, and now Crossfit, have taught me to prioritize surrounding myself with people that encourage me, push my limits, and remind me that I'm stronger than I think. Any advice for someone just starting? Don’t overthink it. Just show up. Work hard and know you are stronger than you think! How long have you been in Hanoi? 1 year Favorite thing to do in Hanoi (outside of Crossfit)? I would say people watch. Never gets old watching scooters. Favorite thing to eat in Hanoi? Anything I can find that is gluten free. Pho or tacos :) This week, get to know Cuong! Cuong literally always has a smile on his face. He is so happy to be at Crossfit, work out and socialize. Along with his wife, Hoa, he shows up, works hard, and makes everyone smile. Being one of our few Vietnamese speaking members, he always volunteers to help communicate and assist when we need help. Cuong is always up for a challenge, and has recently shown interest in possibly competing! Here is what CFTH means to Cuong... CFTH means a number of things to me : great people, great community, a safe work out environment and a sustainable healthy lifestyle. It also means pain, challenges and growth. It is an essential part of my life. How long have you been doing Crossfit/how long at CFTH?
I've been doing CrossFit for almost 3 years. I started back in August 2016 at Adapt Cross Fit in Canberra, Australia as a way to improve fitness and fight against a sedentary lifestyle. My first time training at CFTH was in back in February 2017 as a dropin. When we settled back to Hanoi in July 2018, that's when I became full time member . Favorite movement/WOD and why? Deadlift - as it is a total body workout and there's many benefits that come with it. Also there's incredible positive energy in a heavy lifting session. Something positive Crossfit has taught you? Dedication - CF has taught me to dedicate my time, my effort to make it to the box and train no matter rain or shine. Through many failures and the inability to perform a certain movement, it forces me to want to get better. Community support and camaraderie - you never have to suffer alone, and if you were the last person to finish, people will give you all sort of support and encouragement to get you through to the finish line and most likely pushing your limit. There were many times where I think I was dying but I didn't. What doesn't kill you make you stronger right? Any advice for someone just starting? Just keep on going to the class. Perseverance and consistency is the key. How long have you been in Hanoi? I was born and bred in Hanoi for the first 15 years and was abroad for 20 years before moving back here in Hanoi. Favorite thing to do in Hanoi (outside of Crossfit)? Would be golfing and dining out. Although dining out and Cross Fit just don't go well together. I'd like to think I do Crossfit training so that I can enjoy more food. Favorite thing to eat in Hanoi? Bun Cha (Grill Pork Vermicelli) and of course Pho (chicken or beef). |
